Music
Why music?
I had always wanted to learn to
play a musical instrument and at the age of 56 I plucked up the courage
and borrowed a clarinet and went for music lessons.
I joined a Jazz Worksop and played in a class for beginners. I changed
to soprano saxophone after going to a concert given by Andy Sheppard and
I now play in a saxophone choir in Axminster near where I live.
Music absorbs you. You can’t think about anything else if you are
playing music and it is by far and away one of the best things I have
ever done.
When to start learning music
I was a late developer. There is never a wrong time to start. If you want
to do it, do it now. I have written a book called, Never
Die Wondering, I did not realise how true those words could be. Join
a singing group, choose an instrument and get lessons, invest in your
pleasure.
Ukele
I went to a one off ukele evening with 60 other women, okay there were
about five men there as well, and I bought a ukele for £15.00 in
a beautiful purple. After two hours we played, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
Small beginnings brought huge pleasure.
Jazz Choir
I had always wanted to sing, preferably like Ella Fitzgerald, and so I
joined a local Jazz Choir. It was taxing and exhilarating and we always
came out singing. There are lots of singing groups these days, take courage
in both hands, join one and you will never look back.
